About Lab-Grown Diamond

A laboratory-grown diamond is a diamond. It is not a simulant like cubic zirconia or moissanite; it is carbon in the same crystal lattice, and no jeweller can tell the difference by eye or with a loupe. Identification requires specialised equipment that reads the growth pattern, and reputable stones are laser-inscribed on the girdle to say what they are.

Two processes dominate. CVD grows the crystal from a carbon-rich gas onto a diamond seed; HPHT reproduces the pressure and temperature of the earth’s mantle directly. Both produce gem-quality material, and both are graded on exactly the same four Cs as mined stones.

The practical consequence is size. A lab-grown diamond typically costs a fraction of a mined stone of the same specification, which means a budget that would buy one carat mined might buy two or three grown. For clients who want maximum presence, or who want a fully traceable stone, it is a straightforward answer.

Common questions about lab-grown diamond

Is a lab-grown diamond a real diamond?

Yes. It has the same chemical composition, crystal structure, hardness and optical properties as a mined diamond. The only difference is origin, and that difference is disclosed.

Do lab-grown diamonds hold their value?

Resale values for lab-grown diamonds have fallen as production has scaled, and they should be bought to wear rather than as an investment. The same is largely true of mined diamonds at retail, but the effect is more pronounced with grown stones.

Can a jeweller tell the difference?

Not by eye or loupe. It takes specialised spectroscopic equipment, and most gem-quality lab stones carry a laser inscription identifying them.
